Scuola Vita Nuova: Where Students Thrive and Dreams Come Alive

A report from the field by Samoy Mainda, CEAM Kansas City Outreach Associate.

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Scuola Vita Nuova, and I have to say—it’s truly an amazing place. From the dedicated teachers and staff to the bright and motivated students, everyone at SVN is making a real difference in the Kansas City, Missouri area.

A Vision That Started in 1999
SVN was founded in 1999 by Judge Charles Shangler, who applied for and received permission to open a charter school for students in the community. And has it paid off? Absolutely. The school’s vision—to ensure that every student and family are well taken care of—is evident in everything they do. SVN provides a safe, healthy, and collaborative community of engaged learners, inspiring students academically while fostering a support network for families. Their goal is to be a positive, engaged member of the community and to be recognized statewide as one of the top 10 charter schools in academic performance. And they are thriving, continuing to exceed expectations year after year.

A Focus on Students and Teachers
What struck me most was SVN’s commitment to both student experiences and teacher well-being. Students have access to a variety of enrichment activities, including cooking classes and a fully equipped gym with treadmills, weights, and more. Teachers benefit from a self-care area for relaxation and meditation, plus weekly massage therapy sessions. It’s clear that SVN values its educators just as much as its students.

Small Class Sizes and Hands-On Learning
One of the most impressive things about SVN is the classroom structure and hands-on learning environment. Each classroom has about 20 students, and every teacher is supported by one to two paraprofessionals. During my tour, I saw breakout sessions with paras providing one-on-one tutoring or small group sessions of four to five students. It was incredible to witness the personalized attention and dedication each child receives.

Another unique feature that caught my attention was the way teachers’ classrooms are set up. Instead of traditional desks, some teachers have mini lockers for their belongings, allowing them to move freely around the classroom and provide more hands-on support to the students. This setup really emphasizes active engagement and individualized attention.

Current Offerings and Future Plans
Currently, SVN serves students from kindergarten through 8th grade. But during my conversation with Mrs. Nicole Goodman, Superintendent at SVN, I learned that the school has exciting plans for the future. They hope to add preschool programs within the next couple of years to help prepare young children in the community for a successful start to their education. The foundation they’re building from K–8 is already remarkable, providing a strong academic and community-focused environment for students.

Supporting Mind, Body, and Academics
SVN goes above and beyond to support students’ mind, body, and academic growth. The school provides a full washer and dryer and even a place to shower if students need access to these facilities. This thoughtful approach demonstrates that SVN truly understands that caring for the whole child is essential to their success. The community surrounding the school is just as impressive, with families showing 100% participation parent-teacher conferences for the past 16 years, one of the many reasons each grade level has a waiting list.

Mrs. Goodman shared a powerful insight: “Our legislators need to see what is going on in their community and how vital it is that students are thriving in this urban community setting.” Her words truly capture the impact SVN is having on both students and families.

Thriving Students and Inspiring Stories
During my visit, I spoke with a few students who had previously attended traditional schools. Some came from Ethiopia and struggled to adjust in their previous schools. Now, at SVN, they are thriving and discovering potential they hadn’t imagined possible. The excitement and joy on their faces when sharing their experiences was absolutely inspiring.A Sense of Community and Pride
I also loved seeing all the children in their uniforms, along with the teachers. In fact, I even got a shirt with the SVN logo on it—and I’m proud to say I am now part of the SVN family. Visiting SVN reminded me how much impact a supportive, innovative learning environment can have. This school isn’t just teaching, it’s transforming lives.
