Reimagining Education

To the Moon and Beyond: How One St. Peters Microschool Is Reimagining Education for Every Kind of Learner

Walk through the doors of To the Moon Education in St. Peters, and the first thing you notice is color. Murals painted by the students themselves cover the walls, a visual declaration that this is a place where children’s creativity is celebrated and their voices matter. It is a fitting welcome to a school that has built its entire model around one powerful belief: not all children learn alike, and every single one of them deserves an education designed with that in mind.

To the Moon Education is a growing microschool serving learners of all kinds in grades ranging from early elementary through high school. Their individualized approach is designed to meet all types of learners including neurodivergent learners, neurotypical learners, gifted students, twice-exceptional students, and those with special needs right where they are. The school’s model is built around the individual child. With approximately 55 learners and a maximum student-to-teacher ratio of 5:1, every student receives the focused attention and meaningful relationships that make real growth possible.

The physical environment reflects the school’s philosophy beautifully. Creative and hands-on learning spaces include a STEM lab, a maker space, and an art room where students engage with content through doing, building, and exploring. These spaces are designed to nurture the whole child, not just the academic one.

Each child has an individualized learning plan built around their unique strengths, needs, and goals. Students progress at their own pace rather than being measured against a single standardized timeline, so both the child who needs extra support and the child who is ready to race ahead have room to thrive. The program intentionally prioritizes play, nature, physical activity, and social-emotional development, because these are not extras. They are elements that strengthen confidence, well-being, and academic success.

Flexibility extends to how families structure their child’s week as well. Families can choose a four-day academic week, with Mondays through Thursdays dedicated to structured learning and Fridays reserved for enrichment activities and field trips. For families who need something even more tailored, a two-day option is also available. Some students come to To the Moon Education exclusively for the social and emotional piece while completing their academics through homeschooling, a hybrid approach that recognizes families as active partners in their child’s education rather than passengers in it.

This kind of flexibility is exactly what CEAM believes Missouri families deserve. The reality is that no single educational model works for every child. Families across our state need a wide variety of education delivery methods to choose from, whether that is a traditional public school, a charter school, homeschooling, or an innovative microschool like To the Moon Education. When we expand options, we expand opportunity.

The microschool movement is growing nationally and right here in Missouri, and schools like To the Moon Education are showing what is possible when we center the learner rather than the system.

Missouri families are increasingly seeking options like these, and CEAM is proud to highlight the innovative educators who are meeting that need. To learn more about To the Moon Education, visit tothemooneducation.com.
