NY Mayor Bloomberg Talks Mayoral Control of School Systems

In this recent interview from Think Progress, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg discusses what improvements have been made since he gained mayoral control of the City’s schools. Mayoral control allows for one central figure to be in charge of the schools that cannot be changed on the whims of school boards, often controlled by special interests. Mayors are also must run for reelection on a regular basis, providing for ultimate accountability to the people of the city. Mayoral control of the schools has improved districts in large urban communities, as Mayor Bloomberg referred to in the interview, and the issue should be studied for urban communities in Missouri.
